As an officer approached the suspect, the suspect, 41-year-old Cortez Lamarr White of St. Louis, MO, shot and killed the woman standing in front of him, 42-year-old Ashley N. Stenson of Lithonia, GA (formerly Peoria, IL). As the PPD officer immediately moved to take White into custody, White ran and shots were fired. White was struck by gunfire and transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The officer was not injured. before the incident, Ashley Stenson (ex) travelled from Atlanta to Peoria to attend a wedding. a cousin was supposed to pick her up, but Cortez (shooter) showed up unexpectedly and took her into his own vehicle. while Cortex was driving Ashley, she texted family members that Cortez was going to kill her. Her concerned famiily called 911. At some point, Ashley and Cortez pulled to the side of the road, then the video starts. Peoria County State Attorney Jodi Hoos determined the shooting to be justified, that Cortez's actions left the officer with no choice but to use deadly force.
