He died in a tragic accident while performing a BASE jump during the International Air Festival (FIA) "El Yelmo" in Jaén, Spain. The event took place at Segura de la Sierra. Barrio was performing a stunt using a wingsuit. He jumped from a paraglider with the intention of flying over the castle of Segura de la Sierra. During the maneuver, he reportedly flew too low or experienced a trajectory error, leading him to collide at high speed with a rocky cliff near the castle. Emergency services were on-site but were unable to save him. Ironically, the jump was intended as a tribute to his friend Álvaro Bultó, another famous Spanish extreme athlete who had died in a wingsuit accident in the Swiss Alps just a year prior.
