The victim was identified as Marcela Vitória de Lima Santos, a resident of São Lourenço da Mata. The attack occurred around 3:10 pm, in front of the intersection of Avenida Boa Viagem and Rua Padre Bernardino Pessoa. Marcela was with relatives and went into the sea to bathe when she was bitten on her right leg. The victim's cousin, Jonas André de Lima, heard the screams and pulled the young woman to the shore. A doctor who was at the scene provided first aid. Lifeguards and other bathers helped in the rescue. The Mobile Emergency Care Service (SAMU) and the Fire Department were called. Marcela was taken to Hospital Alfa, in Boa Viagem, and later transferred to Hospital da Restauração, in the center of Recife. There is no updated information on her health status. The animal that attacked the young woman was an adult tiger shark approximately 3 meters long. This is the 84th recorded attack on the coast of Pernambuco since 1992 and the 25th on Boa Viagem beach. The last attack on that beach occurred in 2013.
