An individual opened fire in the street on the morning of Friday, October 23, in Trappes and La Verrière (Yvelines), killing one person and injuring four others, announced Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu. The man has been arrested and taken into police custody, he stated on X. "All resources from the security forces and the judicial authorities have been fully mobilized," Mr. Lecornu added. The head of government condemned these "very serious events." The National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office announced in a statement that it has taken up the case and opened an investigation into several charges, including "murder in connection with a terrorist enterprise with the aggravating circumstance that the acts were committed based on the victim's actual or perceived membership in a specific race, ethnicity, nation, or religion" as well as "conspiracy to commit terrorist acts involving violence against individuals." According to the Yvelines prefecture, emergency services are currently on the scene, and the casualty count "has not yet been finalized." On Friday around midday, Minister of the Interior Laurent Nuñez stated that an "individual in a vehicle opened fire apparently with a military-grade weapon, or at any rate an automatic weapon on five people in various locations." The minister announced that he would travel to the site following a press conference he is holding to unveil security arrangements for the demonstrations scheduled for October 24. The man passed through the town of Trappes, where he opened fire at a gas station, a medical center, and a playground, according to the town's mayor, Ali Rabeh, speaking on BFM-TV. One man has died, and another is injured in "critical condition" near the gas station, Mr. Rabeh reported. "The shooter... intended to cause carnage," he added, noting that "a great many shots" were fired in rapid succession across different neighborhoods in the town. When asked about potential racist motives on the part of the shooter, the mayor of Trappes noted that "the person who died is of African origin, and the person in critical condition is of North African origin," adding that he expects "full transparency regarding his motivations." For his part, the Minister of the Interior stated that "the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office (PNAT) will provide information on this. The PNAT has been brought into the case. I find that to be a fairly strong indication in itself, and I have no further comments to make." In La Verrière, a 12-year-old child was struck, according to Nicolas Dainville the town's mayor (affiliated with the miscellaneous right) who also spoke to BFM-TV. He added that two men, aged 29 and 49, were also targeted and subsequently transported to the hospital.
