On June 13, 2026, Brazilian student Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas died while practicing rope jumping at Ponte do Esqueleto , located in the city of Limeira , São Paulo . The instructors failed to connect the rope to the victim. Three instructors were arrested at the scene. Originally from Jandira , Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas was a physical education student, worked at a gym in her hometown and was 21 years old at the time of the accident. On the morning of June 13, 2026, Maria died after being thrown from a height of 40 meters by two employees of the brands Entre Cordas and Ih Voei na Ponte do Esqueleto , notably without being connected to a rope system that would allow the jump to be practiced safely, falling in free fall. According to the nurse who provided first aid to Maria Eduarda, she had a safety device attached to her abdomen, but it did not indicate that it was connected to ropes. A third instructor was also present, but was not directly responsible for throwing Maria Eduarda. The event was witnessed by several adults and children who recorded the incident from various angles, noting the absence of a safety rope after the woman's body hit the ground. According to witnesses, the instructors remained motionless upon realizing the erroneous launch and attempted to flee the scene, hiding in a wooded area surrounding the bridge, but were located by the Military Police. According to witnesses, there had been jumps prior to Maria's, and in all of them, the rope had been checked, but, according to a witness's account, the instructors did not perform the inspection during Maria's jump. Maria had a camera attached to her wrist at the time of the jump, but the experts were unable to locate the object. Maria Eduarda reportedly asked the instructors to launch her in the "airplane style," which involves being lifted to the height of the instructors' heads in a pose where the person has their arms outstretched before being launched. According to the Military Police, a witness reported that the employees of the company responsible forgot to put on the equipment before the jump. Six people were taken to the 2nd Police District of Limeira, of which three men were arrested in flagrante delicto, one of them a civilian firefighter . The case was registered at the 3rd DP of Limeira as homicide with eventual intent, whose penalty provided by law is close to intentional homicide , when there is intent to kill. The Civil Police, in turn, took over the investigations and carried out initial investigations to determine the circumstances of the accident. After a custody hearing, the court converted the arrest into preventive detention. Delegate Andrea Dantas stated that the men did not follow the correct procedure and inspect the rope's fixation before launching Maria Eduarda, and affirmed that the bridge is "the scene of several tragedies." According to her, the brands Entre Cordas and Ih Voei had been operating for a year in various destinations including the states of São Paulo and Minas Gerais and did not represent regulated companies or have permission to be in the location to provide such services. The Entre Cordas company pages were deleted from social media while the other clients were still on the bridge, and a WhatsApp group that had been created to gather information about the activity was blocked. After questioning the suspects on Sunday, the day after the accident, the police learned that Maria Eduarda should have been attached to at least two ropes, but she was not attached to any. According to the police, during their statements, the suspects were disoriented and could not reasonably explain why Maria was thrown from the bridge without protective equipment. On the Monday following the accident, the police focused on finding more witnesses to the case to give statements. According to one of the witnesses, a member of the team that threw Maria Eduarda off the bridge was seen removing the camera from Maria's neck strap, even while she was on the ground. The investigating officer stated that the camera belonged to the team and was indeed with the victim, but also assessed that it could have slipped from the victim's hand during the fall, despite being attached to her wrist. Officer Andrea Dantas said she believes the camera disappeared from the scene, considering that many people were present at the bridge after the accident.
